Champions!
On Sunday I watched with Brian the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on a big screen on Place Jean-Jaurès in Saint-Étienne, France, exactly like 20 years ago. And just like 20 years ago, Les Bleus won.
We anxiously held our breaths for nearly 90 minutes, hands shaking and hearts racing, but how we chanted and celebrated and laughed when the final whistle was finally blown!
There was a stormy downpour before kick-off, and again after the game;
there was beer thrown about by jubilant supporters;
there was thick flare smoke hiding the screen for several minutes after every French goal (there were 4, no less!);
and there was a sea of French flags and thousands of voices belting out the familiar tune of I will survive after les Bleus lifted the trophy.
The atmosphere was something else, with the entire city, the entire country, gathering behind this multicultural team that mirrors it so well. Saint-Étienne was on fire and there’s nowhere I’d rather have seen France win its second World Cup in 20 years.
Merci les Bleus !
Dimanche j’ai regardé avec Brian la finale de la Coupe du Monde de football sur le grand écran de la place Jean-Jaurès à Saint-Étienne, au même endroit qu’il y a 20 ans. Et comme il y a 20 ans, les Bleus ont gagné !
Nous avons retenu notre haleine pendant 90 minutes, mains tremblantes et cœurs battants, et comme nous avons sauté, crié et chanté quand le coup de sifflet final a enfin retenti ! On est les champions !!!
Un orage avant et un orage après le match,
de la bière jetée en l’air par des supporters déchaînés,
des fumigènes qui masquaient l’écran après chaque but des Bleus (y’en a eu 4, rien que ça !),
une mer de drapeaux tricolores et des milliers de voix entonnant la mélodie familière de I will survive après la remise du trophée,
et surtout, une ambiance de folie et toute une ville, tout un pays qui se rassemble autour de cette équipe qui lui ressemble.
Saint-Étienne était en feu, et je n’aurais être nulle part ailleurs pour voir la France remporter sa deuxième coupe du monde en 20 ans.
