Climbing for the first time / Escalade : une première
BC (before children), Brian and I used to go rock climbing together. Not having practiced in well over a decade, we booked a family induction session at Gravity, one of three indoor climbing centres in the greater Dublin area.
Instructor Theo spent over an hour with us, explaining the main safety rules and the basics of bouldering as a family.
The acorns took to climbing like fish to water. ‘Wouldn’t it be amazing to have my birthday party here?’ Mermaid asked halfway through the session.
True to his nickname, Squirrel took one look around, and off he went. At the best of times, we have trouble keeping him on the ground. Everywhere he goes, he climbs – up trees, walls, fences. If it is upright, it must be scaled.
Needless to say, he had little time for warm up exercises, advice and rules. Not once did he look less than utterly at ease. All nimble legs and strong grip, he climbed way out of our reach… and gave us the thumbs up from the top of the wall!
As for us, it only took a few minutes to get back into the groove of climbing. Next time, we’ll have to climb outdoors again.

Looks like you had a great time! I tried it for the first time a few months ago and am hooked, though not managed to climb for a few weeks now, looking forward to going again. Fabulous pics and glad the little ones had fun!
Thank you for commenting and well done you for trying it too! It is pretty addictive, isn’t it? When I first tried many, many years ago, I was immediately hooked too, which really took me by surprise. Hope you get to go again real soon! x
It looks like great fun and something that I would like to try. Don’t think I’ll be quite as graceful as you and your family though!
