We went down to Massy’s Wood to find an oak tree.
A mighty oak we found, and more, so much more!
For this beautiful woodland is full of surprises.

Massey’s Estate, Co Dublin, somewhat lives in the shadow of its better known neighbour with a sulfurous reputation, Hellfire Club. It ought not. For Massey’s Estate boasts a fascinating past.

The magnificent Killakee House, built in 1804 by Luke White, once stood at the centre of a 3,000 acre demesne. His son Samuel White laid out the gardens in exquisite splendour, with terraced lawns, beautiful fountains, a large greenhouse, and a secluded walled garden, the remains of which can still be seen today.

Samuel White’s nephew, John Thomas William, 6th Baron Massy, inherited the estate in 1880. He sold off his tenanted landholdings under the Land Acts of the late 19th century, but his lavish lifestyle meant that, at the time of his death in 1915, the family fortune had all but been squandered.

Following a series of catastrophic events, Killakee House was repossessed in 1924, and Hugh Hamon, 8th Baron Massy, evicted. A chronic alcoholic, he became known as the ‘penniless peer’. In 1941, Killakee House was demolished under his very eyes. He died in poverty in 1958.

Nous nous allés dans les bois de Massey à la recherche d’un chêne.
Un chêne nous avons trouvé, et tant encore !
Car ce joli bois est plein de surprises.

Massey’s Estate, Co Dublin, vit un peu dans l’ombre de son fameux voisin à la réputation sulfureuse, Hellfire Club. C’est un tort. Car Massey’s Estate recèle un passé fascinant.

Le splendide palais de Killakee, construit en 1804 par le gentilhomme Luke White, se dressait naguère au coeur d’un domaine de quelque 1200 hectares. Son fils Samuel White aménagea les jardins, d’un raffinement inégalé, avec des pelouses en terrasse, des fontaines sculptées, de vastes serres victoriennes et un splendide jardin clos.

En 1880, son neveu John William Thomas, VIe Baron de Massey, un lignage remontant à la Normandie du IXe siècle, hérita du domaine. Malgré la vente d’une grande part des terres en métayage à la fin du XIXe siècle, à la mort du baron en 1915, la fortune de la famille avait été dilapidée par son train de vie extravagant.

A la suite d’une série d’événements catastrophiques, le palais de Killakee fut saisi en 1924, et Hugh Hamon, VIIIe Baron de Massey, expulsé avec sa famille. Alcoolique notoire, le “pair sans le sou” assista, impuissant, à la démolition du palais de Killakee en 1941. Il mourut dans la pénurie en 1958.

We met up with our friend Mary Ann and her sons O and G. Blissfully unaware of this tumultuous history, we followed the Nature Trail, geocaching along the way.

Geocaching in Massy’s Wood

First up was Chip Off The Old Block (GC687M0). Was it because we searched for it while explaining to Mary Ann the basic principles of geocaching? Six children and three adults let loose on a small patch of woodland, and still, we didn’t find it.

This was our first DNF (“did not find”). Looking through the online log later that day, I realised we probably saw and touched the cache, without understanding that this was it. We will be back!

The next cache, Teddy’s Stash (GC6871Z), was Mermaid’s first find. She was understandably delighted that her turn had finally come to unearth a cache.

Like the proverbial bus, See You Later (GC6877Y) was Mermaid’s second find, only a few minutes later. The older children scrambled through shrubs and bushes above a burrow, where Mermaid spotted the inconspicuous bag tucked beneath a branch.

Sans rien savoir de cette histoire tulmutueuse, nous avons retrouvé Mary Ann et ses deux fils O et G, et emprunté le sentier de nature, cherchant des géocaches en chemin.

Chip Off The Old Block (GC687M0) était la première. Est-ce parce que nous l’avons cherchée tout en expliquant à Mary Ann les principes de base du géocaching ? Nul ne sait. Toujours est-il que six enfants et trois adultes déambulant sur un petit carré de forêt n’ont pas su repérer cette cache.

Plus tard, consultant le registre en ligne, j’ai compris que nous avons probablement vu et touché le contenant, sans réaliser que c’était la cache. Ce n’est que partie remise !

C’est Sirène qui a trouvé la suivante, Teddy’s Stash (GC6871Z), sa toute première. Elle était bien sûr enchantée que son tour soit enfin venu de “géotrouver” !

Quelques minutes plus tard, elle dénicha aussi See You Later (GC6877Y). Les plus grands ont crapahuté à travers arbustes et buissons jusqu’à la cime d’un talus, où Sirène repéra le sac discrètement placé sous une grosse branche.

Geocaching was fun, but as soon as the Owendoher River came within sight, the acorns immediately switched to waterplay mode. We followed the river, with a bout of hide-and-seek along the way, until we reached a little clearing. There, past a large pool of squishy mud and a huge fallen tree trunk, hanging from a big branch high above the flowing stream, was a stick swing.

Standing on stones in the middle of the river, Brian hoisted all the children, but Pebbles, onto it.

This was the highlight of the day. Or was it finding the ruins of the estate’s icehouse, which immediately became the children’s castle?

With little legs getting tired and shoes already dripping wet, we then made our way to the exit. But we are not done with Massy’s Wood. Although winter storms have wreaked havoc on many trees, this truly delightful woodland surely has many more surprises in store.

Aussi prenant que fût le géocaching, dès que la rivière Owendoher apparut en contrebas du sentier, les graines de chêne passèrent immédiatement en mode aquatique. Nous avons continué le long de la berge, avec une partie de cache-cache au fil du chemin, jusqu’à une clairière. Là, au-delà d’une vaste mare de boue et derrière un énorme tronc d’arbre couché, suspendue à une haute branche au-dessus du ruisseau, se trouvait une balançoire.

Debout sur des rochers au milieu de l’eau, Brian a hissé tous les enfants, sauf Caillou, sur le bâton.

Ce fut le temps fort de la journée. Ou alors ce fut la chambre froide en ruines du domaine, qui devint tout de suite le château des enfants.

Les petites jambes commençant à fatiguer, et les bottes étant déjà trempées, nous sommes remontés vers la sortie. Mais nous n’en avons pas terminé avec le bois de Massey. Même si les tempêtes hivernales ont endommagé maints arbres, ce bois enchanteur recèle sûrement bien d’autres surprises.
