Along Strabane’s towpath / Sur le chemin de halage de Strabane

We spent last weekend in Northern Ireland, for it was Grandad’s 75th birthday.

On Saturday afternoon, we went out for a short, brisk walk along Strabane’s towpath, with Brian’s sister Amanda and her son. Brian spotted this nearby footpath on WalkNI, a website that we’ll use again next time we are ‘up north’.

The Strabane Canal, built in the late 18th century, connected the market town of Strabane, Co Tyrone, and the port of Derry, on the north coast of Ireland, via the mighty river Foyle. Opened in 1796, it closed in 1962, following a century of thriving trade, and a long, steady decline in the 20th century. Since 2006, the two locks and a section of the canal have been restored to working order, although they are now falling into disrepair again, for lack of maintenance.

Nous sommes retournés en Irlande du Nord le weekend dernier, à l’occasion du soixante-quinzième anniversaire de Grandad.

Samedi après-midi, nous sommes partis pour une courte balade revigorante le long du chemin de halage de Strabane, Co Tyrone, avec la soeur de Brian, Amanda, et son fils. Brian avait repéré cette sortie toute proche sur WalkNI, un site que nous réutiliserons lors de nos prochaines escapades dans le nord.

Le canal de Strabane, construit à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, reliait le bourg de Strabane au port de Derry, sur la côte nord de l’Irlande, via la puissante rivière Foyle. Inauguré en 1796, il fut fermé en 1962, au bout d’un siècle d’activité, suivi d’un long déclin au XXe siècle. Depuis 2006, une section du canal et ses deux écluses ont été restaurées, mais elles se détériorent à nouveau à défaut d’entretien.
